Fourth Latin American Award for

The Life and Security of Women and Girls in

Latin America and the Caribbean - 2011

 

To commemorate the International Day against Trafficking in Persons, Prostitution, and all forms of Sexual Exploitation, on September 23rd, the Regional Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean (CATWLAC), it’s Consultative Board and it’s National Networks, invite organizations from civil society, local and federal governments, civil servants of executive, judicial and legislative bodies, as well as citizens to nominate themselves or others for the Fourth Latin American Award for the Life and Security of Women And Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean, which seeks to recognize best practices in Advocacy, Protection, Prevention, Prosecution, Academic Research, Media, and Cultural or Artistic Expressions against trafficking in women and girls and/or in favor of victims and possible victims in Latin America and the Caribbean with special emphasis on the Demand.  

 

Terms and Conditions

 

As of the publication of this release, CATWLAC officially commences the award nomination period.

1.                  Nominations

1.1                 Nominations must be submitted by a civil society organization, individual, or the candidate him/herself. A nomination letter must demonstrate the merit of the award candidate and be sent via e-mail to the Jury of the Award at premiolac@catwlac.org.

1.2               The term of nomination submission will begin on March 8th of the present year, with the present publication, and will close on July 31st 2011.

1.3               Nominations will be taken into account when the award registration form is e-mailed before 24:00 hrs. on July 31st, which must include contact information for the nominating organization or individual (or personal information if you are nominating yourself) and basic information of the candidate.

2.                Candidates

2.1               The nominated candidates must have the following credentials:

2.1.1          Be nationals of the country competing and have a known prestige at the national and/or Latin American level.

2.1.2        Have contributed in a exemplary and relevant way to the knowledge and extensive advocacy for women’s human rights, the promotion of equality between genders and have been specifically recognized for  his/her outstanding work in the fight against trafficking in women and girls.

2.1.3        Haven’t incurred any acts or omissions that violate the rights of women or laws of his/her country, and have no criminal records.

3.                Nomination Requirements

3.1               The nomination letter should be submitted with an electronic copy of the candidate’s resume as well as documents that guarantee his/her work history during the past five (5) years until the date of nomination.

3.2             The submitted nominations must include a gender perspective and provide evidence of the candidate’s actions and contributions to reduce trafficking in women and girls, to protect, prevent and assist female trafficking victims; or alternatively, provide evidence of the candidate’s actions to prosecute and punish the traffickers and users to discourage the demand as a form of violence against women.

3.3              It is particularly appreciated if proposals contain one or more of the following elements:

3.3.1         Promotion and/or activities of civil society organizations to prevent trafficking in women and girls and defend of the human rights of/or assist these victims.

3.3.2      Policies and public programs with a gender perspective to prevent, protect, and advocate for trafficking victims.

3.3.3      Mass media interventions about trafficking in women and girls, which respects victims’ human rights, in a Latin American country.

3.3.4      Drafting of gender sensitive laws and regulations for the prevention, protection and prosecution of the crime of trafficking in women and girls; including legislative or other measures to discourage the demand that promotes trafficking in women and girls.

3.3.5      Academic research that demonstrates the situation of trafficking in women and girls in the Latin American country.

3.3.6     Public Security or Civil Protection interventions, investigation and rescue of women and girls in the Latin American country.

3.3.7      Court sentences and judicial actions in cases of trafficking in women and girls.

3.3.8      Artistic, Literary or Cultural Expression that make visible trafficking in women and girls, with a special emphasis on the demand.

4.                 Nominated Work

4.1               The initiative should be presented in writing and fulfill the following criteria:

4.1.1                    Define the problem(s) of the trafficking phenomenon.

4.1.2                   Outline the pursued objectives as well as the strategies used to reach them. (Excluding proposals submitted by members of the judicial power, policemen and members of national security.)

4.1.3                   Describe the implemented actions and activities included in the job methodology. (Excluding proposals submitted by the members of judicial bodies.)

4.1.4                    Obtained results: total population that was benefitted or impacted, modified behavior, as well as an evaluation of the accomplished goals against the initially outlined objectives. 

4.1.5                    Conclusions that note lessons learned and their potential applications in other contexts.

4.1.6       Additional informative material can be included in an annex; however, it can not replace the written report.

5.                Nomination Format

5.1               Proposals reviewed by the jury must:

5.1.1           Be written in Spanish.

5.1.2         Not exceed ten pages (not including annexes) and be written in Arial 12 pt. font.

5.1.3         Be preceded by a brief executive summary, of maximum 3,000 words, which explains the general content of the work (i.e. proposed policy, sentence, law or reform, publicity models, investigation, rescue or action).

5.1.4         All proposals must be sent by email in PDF format. Scanned documents must be sent in JPG or word format.

5.1.5         Civil organizations must send a copy of a certificate or letter of reference that accredits the participating organization.

6.                Award Selection Process

6.1              The award winner will be selected by the CATWLAC Consultative Board and the Regional Director.

6.2            The President of the Consultative Board will serve as the President of the Jury.

6.3            The Jury will act with the utmost liberty and discretion to discern the award, and will deliver a verdict, either confirmed or void. In case of discrepancy, the verdict will be determined by a simple majority of one half plus one. The Jury’s verdict will be reasoned with definitive and unquestionable character.

6.4            The Jury will pronounce the verdict, at the latest, on August 31st of the present year. CATWLAC will announce the results on September 23rd 2011 and the Award Ceremony will take place the same day.

6.5            If the Jury finds a proposal worthy of Honorary Mention, the corresponding award will be granted.

6.6            The winning proposal of each First Place category will be published and promoted by the Regional Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean.

7.                Award Ceremony

7.1               The award will consist of a public recognition of his/her contributions at a formal ceremony on September 23rd of the present year at a location to be determined by the Organizing Board in Mesoamerica.

7.2             The winner(s) will be informed prior to the award ceremony. His/her physical presence is necessary to claim the award.

8.                Exclusions

8.1               Jury members can not nominate candidates for the award. Additionally, proposals that have been developed with the direct or indirect participation of jury members will not be accepted.
