Gender Action Report: World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank: Haiti Post-Earthquake Track Record on Gender, Agriculture and Rural Development

Gender Action's new report demonstrates that most World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) post-earthquake investments in Haiti represent lost opportunities to help Haiti's predominantly poor female farmers, prevent gender-based violence, and support gender-inclusive development efforts.

In the wake of Haiti's earthquake and with food prices increasing worldwide, Gender Action is closely monitoring the gender and socioeconomic impacts of recent World Bank and IDB agriculture and rural development investments.

The report, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB): Haiti Post-Earthquake Track Record on Gender, Agriculture and Rural Development , reveals that the majority of the 50 World Bank and IDB post-earthquake grants that were approved between January and mid-October 2010 neither focus on agriculture and rural development, nor on the role of women.

The report includes recommendations for the World Bank and the IDB to promote:

  •  Greater women's participation in more gender-sensitive World Bank and IDB development projects in Haiti;
  • An end to World Bank and IDB rural sector privatization that benefits transnational corporations but undermines small-scale farmers' livelihoods and social welfare;
  • Greater World Bank and IDB project transparency, especially in regards to public dissemination of relevant gender assessments.
