Sri Lanka - Strengthening the Capacity of Women to Challenge
Gender Based Violence
- ISD, together with the Working Women's Front (WWF), have
launched several programmes and activities for the 16 Days of Activism Against
Gender-Based Violence.
- ISD mainly focuses on the
issues of the Sri Lankan plantation community as it is a minority social
fraction that is marginalized from the mainstream, thus being more
vulnerable for violence and discrimination.
- We
initiated discussions and awareness raising programmes with the women in
the plantations who are mainly plantation labourers also including
teachers and garment factory female employees on various issues such as
domestic violence, discrimination at the work place, human rights, labour
rights and women's rights.
- ISD published a special
bulletin for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based
Violence that comprise of legal background and actions to be taken
both individually and collectively as a community against such violence.
- Further,
we are using electronic media to distribute our message reach a wider
array of receivers.
- Together
with the WWF, we empower women
not only to resist against violence and discrimination but also to defend
and demand their rights such as labour rights and political rights.
