BROCHURE ON RISKS OF COMMERCIAL
SEXUAL EXPLOITATION
OF CHILDREN IN INSTITUTIONAL
CARE FACILITIES

La Strada Czech Republic has recently published a brochure titled "It’s
Cool... To Know More," focusing on the risks of the
commercial sexual
exploitation of children in institutional care facilities.
The main part of the "It's Cool..." brochure is a report
on the research
conducted between 2006 and 2007 in both the Czech and Slovak Republics.
The aim of the research was to map the experience of children placed in
institutional care facilities with prostitution in order to better
understand the factors leading to such experience and to be able to
design effective and evidence based prevention strategies. The report
identifies these factors and the dangers children may face that can make
them susceptible to commercial sexual exploitation. It further provides
a typology of prostitution based on interviews conducted during the
research, and it recommends possible prevention strategies as suggested
by respondents. In order to provide basic insight into the topic the
report is preceded by a brief introduction clarifying the relevant
terminology.
At the end of the brochure, the recommendations of La
Strada Czech Republic resulting from the research are listed.
The brochure is one of the outputs from the project The Prevention of
Human Trafficking among at Risk Groups with Special Emphasis on
Institutional Care in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which was
implemented by La Strada Czech Republic in collaboration with the Slovak
branch of the Czech organization People In Need between April 2006 and
March 2008. The project was funded by the European’s Commission Daphne
Programme.
