18 Candles: the Convention on the Rights of the Child

18 Candles: the Convention on the Rights of the Child Reaches Majority

"The convention on the Rights of the Child and other human rights instruments including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, insist that girls have equal rights with boys to human rights. Moreover, research in different parts of the world has shown that the traditional view of the girl child as one born mainly to perform subservient and reproduction roles not requiring investments, is short-sighted. This view not only denies the girl child her basic human right, but is also detrimental to overall human, social and economic development. Girls', and women's, education has been shown to contribute critically to better child care, control of the HIV epidemic, and reduction of poverty, and overall socioeconomic development."

"Children from poor and or rural households and whose mothers had no education, are especially likely to face exclusion from school."
